Born in
Carmarthenshire,
Katie Morgan
is regarded
as being "one
of the most
talented
flautists of
her
generation".
When a knee
injury ended
her dancing
career at
the age of
14, Katie
embarked on
what was the
start of a
very
successful
music
career.
Learning the
piano at the
age of 14,
and flute at
the age of
16; Katie
achieved
grade 8
distinction,
within just
six-and-a-half
months of
learning the
flute. A few
months
later, she
then
achieved the
Advanced
Certificate,
followed by
the LRSM
diploma. Katie subsequently played flute in the National Youth Orchestra of Wales.
At the age of 17, Katie caught the attention of International Soloist, Jonathan Snowden, who spotted Katie's talent and took her on as his student, despite him being a teacher, who at that time, tended to only teach postgraduate flautists and professional musicians. She would then travel 120 miles from Wales, for regular 2-hour lessons with Jonathan at his home in Somerset, and was made to relearn the flute from scratch! (Hopefully these words will be of some inspiration to advanced flute players who need to combat their bad habits and "transform" their flute playing!)
Katie subsequently obtained a place
to study at
the
prestigious
Guildhall
School of
Music,
London, in
affiliation
with City
University.
She majored
in flute
performance,
along side
musicological
studies, and
graduated
with a BMus
Honours
degree, with
1st class in
Guildhall
Flute
Performance.
Upon graduating, Katie continued
her flute
studies with
the
world-renown
flautist,
Paul
Edmund-Davies .
Katie was formerly a prize winner in
the
International
Young Artist
Competition,
and is now
undertaking
her first
recording
project of
music for
flute and
piano.
Experienced
as a solo,
chamber and
orchestral
flautist;
Katie has
performed at
major venues
throughout
Britain and
abroad.
Recent
engagements
have
included
performances
at The
Barbican,
St. John's
Smith
Square,
London;
Royal
Festival
Hall,
London;
Konzerthaus,
Berlin; Sala
Filarmonicii,
Bukarest;
Saint
David's
Hall,
Cardiff;
Waterfront
Hall,
Belfast; and
National
Concert
Hall,
Dublin.
Katie is
also
experienced
in
performing
all genres
of flute
music -
classical,
contemporary
(extended
techniques,
etc.), jazz,
folk, new
age.
As a
student,
Katie
studied with
or performed in masterclasses
with:
William
Bennett,
Jonathan
Snowden,
Paul
Edmund-Davies,
Robert Dick,
Ian Clarke,
Mike Mower,
Averil
Williams,
Lisa Nelson,
and Katy
Gainham.
In addition
to her
high-profile
performing
career,
Katie hopes to one day embark upon a career in
Medicine, and perhaps combine her love of music and fascination with science to become an Otolaryngologist! She will
continue to
perform
internationally,
along side
her aspired future
Medical
career. Furthermore, Katie also holds a Masters Degree in Medical Law from Queen Mary University, London.
Katie plays
a
'Britannia'
Silver Altus
Flute, after
winning a
Bircham

in 2001
